Philip Bernard
Senior Vice President, Global HDD Operations
Western Digital Storage Technology
Professional Background & Experience
Philip Bernard is the Senior Vice President of Global HDD Operations, with over 30 years of experience in the hard drive industry. He has held executive positions in engineering and operations at Western Digital Corporation in both Asia and the United States. In his current role, based in Thailand, he leads WD’s main operation in Thailand together with pilot factories overseas, as well as engineering support ranging from tools and test equipment design to sustaining engineering in many countries.
Philip holds multiple patents in the field of storage engineering and is a strong advocate for Industry 4.0 technologies, contributing to both industry and academic advancements.
AMCHAM & Association Experience
Philip Bernard, through Western Digital’s membership in Malaysia, has been an active participant and strong supporter of AMCHAM Malaysia activities during his tenure in Kuala Lumpur. During the Covid-19 pandemic, he closely partnered with AMCHAM Malaysia CEO Datuk Siobhan Das on initiatives aimed at supporting the efforts of the relevant Malaysian authorities/agencies that were grappling with the pandemic. Their efforts focused on allowing a significant number of electrical and electronics-based manufacturing companies to continue operating as critical industries despite the country’s total lockdown. This was crucial in alleviating the severe shortages of electronic components affecting the global supply chain at that time.
On the academic front, Philip Bernard served as a member of the Industrial Advisory Panel for the School of Engineering and Computer Engineering at Monash University’s Malaysian campus from 2012 to 2015. In March 2021, he was appointed as the Industrial Advisor for the Physics Department at Xiamen University Malaysia.
AMCHAM Board Governor Goals
Philip believes he can contribute as a Governor, particularly in the areas of sustainability in industry and the promotion of widespread use of 4IR/5IR/AI technologies at both the industry and community levels in Thailand. Regarding sustainability, renewable energy (RE) is a critical topic in Thailand and globally, especially in manufacturing, due to stringent regulatory controls requiring green energy usage. Pricing and availability of RE will become significant issues for manufacturers, necessitating associations like AMCHAM to lead efforts in advocating for competitiveness with relevant authorities and energy producers.
On the topic of 4IR/5IR/AI, there is a continuous need to push for higher adoption rates among member businesses and the SMEs that support them. Philip’s valuable experience in implementing 4IR technologies within Western Digital’s factories and its early adoption of AI can be leveraged by AMCHAM to raise awareness among its members about the potential of these platforms, particularly in terms of productivity. Additionally, there is a need to upskill workforces with AI/4IR knowledge alongside their adoption, an area where Philip’s expertise can be instrumental.
