"Fear is an innate emotion that affects everyone. Some people fear the dark, others fear small places, and some fear ghosts. I believe our unique experiences and surroundings shape each of these fears. Among my fears, poverty is the one that frightens me the most.

I am Paramee Duangthaoset, a fourth-year student pursuing a bachelor's degree in the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Management Sciences at Kasetsart University Chalermphrakiat Sakon Nakhon Province Campus. I am in my last year of college as I write this story. To be honest, my journey to be here hasn't been easy at all. My family lived in the province of Udon Thani in a small rural community. We are a middle-class family. When I was a child, our family was big and happy. We may not be wealthy, but we always look out for one another. That was before my mother's accident, which left her crippled and with only one leg. This catastrophic event forever changed the course of my family's existence.

My parents used to be the heads of our family and responsible for financially supporting us. Right now, my father is the only sole provider, generating income to meet our needs. The thing I feared most happened soon after my mother's accident. Poverty plunged my family into a financial crisis as we had to save money to take care of my mother and a grandmother who is sick with a congenital disease. It forced my father to work far from home to earn money to support the family and  take care of my older sister and myself, who were still in primary school at the time. The financial difficulties caused us to grow distant. My older sister decided to leave home to look for work to help with the financial burden and to make it possible for me to continue my schooling. My life has been challenging in certain ways since I was a little child. I started working part-time and took on almost every job I could to help the family out financially, such as housework, snack sales, and translating English audio. I am also actively seeking a scholarship to help me finish my bachelor's degree because I believe that education is the key to escaping poverty.

The AMCHAM goes above and beyond by providing scholarships that cover more than just the cost of my education. It is also an opportunity to learn from new experiences. Among other things is improving society; thus, I'm confident that receiving this scholarship will make me a better person overall. All of this led me to choose to apply for the AMCHAM scholarship. In my life, the AMCHAM is comparable to a turning point. I was afraid of making mistakes because I didn't know if I would be able to start over after making one. AMCHAM helped me overcome my fear of expenses, opening a whole new world for me. They organized workshops and career camps to develop my potential. Without AMCHAM, I wouldn't have known how someone like me could get such invaluable experience. One significant aspect of AMCHAM that I have come to appreciate is that it not only provides scholarships but also transforms lives. This is why the AMCHAM Scholarship stands out from others because of its unique quality.

Career Camp

AMCHAM Scholarship student recipients are welcome to participate in a career camp and I too took part in this camp. The AMCHAM/FedEx Career Camp is a great experience for fresh graduates like me, who will soon be a first jobber. We were lodging at the JC Kevin Sathorn Bangkok Hotel during the event. We began the activity with an ice-breaking game that allowed my friends and me from various universities to better acquaint ourselves. This workshop serves as an opportunity to understand each other, explore our own personalities, and appreciate the diversity within our group. The next activity is dinner with new friends, which proves to be enjoyable and worthwhile.

Additionally, there is an opportunity to engage in conversations with senior managers from some of the big businesses in the nation. The following day, I had the opportunity to attend a lecture by qualified speakers. This experience provided me with valuable knowledge and ideas for my future career, as well as preparation for the situations I may encounter in the workplace. This activity is particularly beneficial for students who are on the verge of graduation. Additionally, I participated in a workshop focused on improving my interviewing techniques, cultivating a positive personality, and creating an effective resume. The highlight of this camp involved visiting renowned companies and meeting with senior executives, including experiencing a real job interview at a prestigious company. It was a very exciting experience for me. I discovered my shortcomings in mock interviews, such as a lack of experiences, anxiety, and poor speaking abilities, prompting me to recognize the need for improvement. Additionally, I learned which advantages should be restored to make things better than before. None of this would have been possible without participating in AMCHAM programs. Finally, I want to express my gratitude to everyone who helped make the career camp possible. I also hope that in the future, I will be able to contribute to helping future generations of youngsters realize their aspirations or develop their talents.

It has been about eight months since I wrote this story. Although the last eight months seemed lengthy, I feel they passed quickly. This might be because I can still vividly recall the excitement and events surrounding my admission to the career camp. I continue with my life as a final-year student, getting up, learning, working, and lending a hand to others. While my daily routine may not seem as elaborate as that of others my age, I feel I am progressing closer to my goals.

Helping young people to be inspired and developing their talents is my goal after returning from the camp. In order to achieve this goal, I have started by sharing my experiences and counsel with juniors in my major, friends from various faculties, and kids in my neighborhood. For example, two months ago, I was invited to speak about my internship experience, offering guidelines for young individuals interested in internships in the field. In addition, I have taken the knowledge and various tips I gained from the mock interview from the career camp to introduce to junior students at the university for use. I provided job interview counseling as well as helping them look at their resumes and teaching them how to write them correctly. This is the first step towards my goal. And I am very proud of myself."
