AMCHAM Food & Agri-Alert: Suspension of Poultry and Swine Importation

Since the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) reported an outbreak of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) and African Swine Fever disease in many countries, it is necessary for Thailand to prevent the entry of HPAI and African Swine Fever disease into Thailand.

On January 19, 2024, Thailand’s Department of Livestock Development implemented thirteen notifications in the Government Gazette as follows:

These are important notifications for food importation businesses in Thailand. The importation or transit of live poultry and poultry carcasses from the following countries are suspended temporarily for a period of 90 days from their dates of publication in the Government Gazette.

  • Belgium
  • Chinese Taipei, except the feathers and down of poultry that have been processed in an approved establishment by the Department of Livestock Development (DLD), and after those commodities have been processed to ensure the destruction of avian influenza virus as recommended by the WOAH Terrestrial Animal Health Code topics 10.4.22 and 10.4.23 using one of the following methods:
    • washed and steam-dried at 100˚C for 30 minutes.
    • fumigation with formalin (10% formaldehyde) for 8 hours.
    • irradiation with a dose of 20 kilogram.
  • Morbihan, Nord, and Somme regions of France
  • Germany
  • India
  • Philippines
  • United States of America

The importation or transit of live domestic pigs, wild pigs and/or their carcasses from the following countries are temporarily suspended for a period of 90 days after their dates of publication in the Thai Royal Gazette.

  • Indonesia
  • Myanmar
  • Philippines
  • Poland
  • South Korea
  • Vietnam

The temporary suspension period for the importation or transit of live poultry, poultry carcasses, live domestic pigs, wild pigs, and/or pig carcasses from these countries will end on April 18, 2024.
