Discussion with Ambassador Katherine Tai, the United States Trade Representative

On May 20, 2022, Jeff Nygaard, President of the American Chamber of Commerce in Thailand (AMCHAM Thailand) and Executive Vice President of Operations & Technology, Seagate led a group of leading US companies to meet with Ambassador Katherine Tai, USTR. The meeting was hosted by National Center for Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (NAPEC) and joined by representatives from the US-ASEAN Business Council (USABC) and the US Embassy.

Ambassador Tai shared the US priorities to work with the Thai government to protect shared principles and values, enforce international trade rules and norms, and engage constructively through framework with shared membership including APEC, the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF), and the US-ASEAN Summit. In particular, the engagements will focus on inclusion, sustainability, and resilience.

US businesses had an opportunity to share their views on promoting digital economy to achieve inclusive growth, increasing digitization in trading system, creating level playing field in tourism industry, and efforts to improve women’s health.

In addition to the meeting with Ambassador Tai, the representatives joined a meeting with Matt Murray, US Senior Official for APEC, where he shared an update on APEC’s work and priorities for Senior Official Meeting (SOM) 2. In his remarks, he further emphasized the US hosting of APEC Summit in 2023 as an opportunity to demonstrate APEC’s benefits and gain support from American citizens at home.
