On March 31, to nearly 50 members, AMCHAM Women and UN Women presented to raise awareness and mobilize activity for gender equality. AMCHAM Women Committee Co-Chair, Jennifer Peng, Finance Director, Colgate-Palmolive; introduced guest speakers Katja Freiwald, Regional Programme Manager, WeEmpowerAsia; Suvipha Chaladkid, Manager, Business and Economic Development, Kenan Foundation Asia; and Pathomporn Hannarkin, Country Human Resources Officer, Citibank N.A.

Katja spoke about the WeEmpowerAsia program that supports women empowerment. She discussed barriers that women face in Asia Pacific economies, the declining employment rates, and over-representation in vulnerable and informal employment. Advancing women’s equality could add 4.5 trillion Dollars of 12 percent of additional GDP in 2025 to the economies of Asia Pacific, she stated. She did a deep dive into Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs) for improving business performance and shared information on how to become a signatory.

Suvipha presented statistics from a gender gap report. Thailand ranked 75th out of 153 countries indicating that gender inequality exists in the country. She provided information on the benefits of joining the WEP Activator Program and how organizations can integrate WEP and sustain it.

As a signatory of WEP, Pathomporn spoke about Citi’s commitment to gender equality. She gave examples of Citi’s positive gender equality actions both internally and externally, which is embedded in its employee training and development programs, equal career opportunities, hiring practices, employee benefits, and marketing activities.

The event was followed by a question-and-answer session moderated by AMCHAM Executive Director Heidi Gallant. Members asked questions on how to become a signatory of WeEmpowerAsia and practical steps for organizations to promote gender equality in their organization.
