On September 23, AMCHAM Executive Director, Heidi Gallant attended the Phuket Hotels for Islands Sustaining Tourism (PHIST) 2019. Organized by the Phuket Hotels Association, C9 Hotelworks and Greenview, PHIST is Asia’s largest sustainability forum for the tourism industry. PHIST brings together stakeholders in the industry to tackle critical environmental issues facing travel and tourism. The event is a key platform to discuss and put into action solutions and measures to foster sustainable and community tourism in resort destinations.
With a focus on analyzing 5 island markets in the ASEAN region for sustainability and performance, the event addressed a wide range of sustainable tourism topics such as destination management, development, ocean health, over-tourism, hotel operations and community tourism. The conference attracted over 1,000 delegates and was a mix of a series of panel discussions, exhibitions and practical workshops for future green leaders.
Speakers included local and international experts, influencers in the industry and over 60% of speakers were female and touched on a younger demographic. The event featured films, workshops on plastic reduction, sustainability trends by Phuket Hotels Association and eco-design and eco-construction and presentations by the youth of Phuket. The event is an excellent opportunity to network and build partnerships in sustainable tourism.
