Government Affairs Update: Department of Business Development
AMCHAM Executive Director meets with Director General of the Department of Business Development
On March 14, 2019, Heidi Gallant, Executive Director of AMCHAM, met with Vuttikrai Leewiraphan, Director General of the Department of Business Development (DBD), Ministry of Commerce.
The discussion covered the DBD’s current policy priorities, Thailand 4.0, ease of doing business, the Foreign Business Act, and AMCHAM - DBD cooperation. On ease of doing business, the DBD is reducing and integrating processes so commercial registration can be processed as speedily as within one day. This is in line with the government’s policy to raise Thailand’ global ranking in terms of ease of doing business, under the umbrella of the Regulatory Guillotine project.
The DBD’s mission is to facilitate the business sector, with a current focus on the EEC. Regarding the Foreign Business Act, the DBD is required to conduct an annual review of the Foreign Business Act. Government policy is looking toward liberalizing these regulations, particularly those concerning the EEC, as well as those focusing on the finance and insurance industries.
AMCHAM supports the revised Smart Visa program, to which it contributed recommendations, to attract more foreign skilled workers in the targeted industries. In Southeast Asia, Thailand is the hub of CLMVT and is expected to be the catalyst of growth in the region, spearheaded by the EEC, and reinforced by the high potential SEC (Southern Economic Corridor). AMCHAM and the DBD concluded the meeting with a good outlook for continued cooperation.
