Legal Committee Video Conference: Live from Washington DC and New York! - What’s the View from Washington DC and What is Next?

On June 16, AMCHAM’s Legal Committee held a video conference for over 40 AMCHAM members Live from Washington DC and New York! - What’s the View from Washington DC and What is Next?

Legal Committee Co-Chair, Christopher Knight, introduced the guest speakers. The offices of Holland & Knight, an international law firm assembled thought leaders from their Washington, D.C. and New York offices from different practice areas to share their insight, and discuss key issues facing international companies and AMCHAM members during the covid-19 pandemic.

Kara Ward, Partner, Holland & Knight LLP's Public Policy & Regulation Group spoke about the  Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act that offers economic relief to small and medium sized enterprises to fight the impact of covid-19 and explained key provisions of the Act. Christopher Armstrong, Partner, Holland & Knight LLP's Public Policy & Regulation Group spoke about Congress's legislative agenda, including civil justice reforms, appropriations, and the House's infrastructural package. He also mentioned that this stimulus would take a longer time to come into place, especially once campaign season comes into full swing in September.

Ronald Oleynik, Partner, Holland & Knight LLP. spoke about the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA), President Trump’s strategic economy policy and sanctions, customs, export control which has a focus on technology, and trade policies. He advised AMCHAM’s member companies shipping goods to the United States to be vigilant as U.S.-China Trade war intensifies. Richard Smith, Partner, Holland & Knight LLP. mentioned that covid-19 has resulted in a significant slowdown in local Mergers & Acquisitions activity and there have been regulatory delays, and delays in obtaining third party consent. Scott Mason, who works closely with the Trump Administration, gave insights on the 2020 elections and potential impacts on businesses internationally.

Christopher Knight moderated the question and answers session. Members asked questions on trade and economic ties with China and what businesses could expect moving forward.
