The First AMCHAM Start-Up Pitch Night

The First AMCHAM Start-Up Pitch Night

On November 27 at the FYI Center, AMCHAM’s Young Professionals Committee (YPC) held its first Start-Up Pitch Night; a special event where start-up companies competed for an opportunity to win an AMCHAM Associate Membership. Over 100 people signed up to watch 5 business hopefuls pitch their ideas to a panel of esteemed judges: Hemant Bhardwaj, Managing Partner of Taurus Ventures, Timothy Hughes, Vice President of Corporate Development of Agoda, John Heinecke, Chief Operating Officer of Minor Group International, and Chanond Ruangkritya, Chief Executive Officer of Ananda Development.

The evening began with opening remarks by John Millar, Chief Strategic Development Officer with Ananda Development, who spoke on Ananda’s humble beginnings with companies that were willing to collaborate with them early in their development. He made a connection to the pitch night itself, saying that this partnership might be echoed with other investors for the start-ups pitching.

Five start-up companies took part in the inaugural Start-Up Pitch Night: VR4Empathy, Quiet Storm, Foodie, Wayfairer Travel, and Full Circle Filament. Each of the businesses were chosen from a wide variety of applicants by the Young Professional Committee. The start-ups represented a wide range of industries; ranging from an e-commerce service for restaurants, to co-working spaces, to using virtual reality for empathy training in students, and a travel app. After each pitch, the floor was opened to the judges for questions and comments. While the competition was stiff, Full Circle Filament shined just a little brighter to the judges. Full Circle Filament describes itself as an inclusive social enterprise that seeks to close the plastic waste loop via 3D printing.

The evening wrapped with some light networking and food and beverages provided by Pizza Mania, Le Lapin and Nitro Labs. AMCHAM would like to extend a special thanks to YPC Co-Chairs, Ashley Muller, Eliot Delunas, Josh Decker, Punyaphan Klykoom, and their board liaison, George Hartel for all their support on this inaugural event.
