Practical HR & Legal Clinic for SMEs

Practical HR & Legal Clinic for SMEs

On October 16 at Bourbon Street Bangkok, AMCHAM’s HR and SME Committees held a joint event for 30 participants addressing HR and Legal issues that small businesses face. As SME organizations are increasingly under pressure to perform and leaders typically juggle many different aspects of the business, this clinic was a great opportunity for the community to receive advice on issues that larger businesses have entire departments dedicated to. Attendees engaged with accomplished experts in areas regarding Human Resources and Legal matters: Richard Jackson, Co-Founder & General Manager of RLC Recruitment Co. Ltd,  Kate Jackson, Managing Director & Strategic Communications Consultant at Andragogy, and David Lawrence, Partner at Pisut & Partners.

With recent research showing that SME principals spend an average of 2 days per week dealing with necessary human resource or legal issues, this event gave participants some much needed advice when dealing with these issues. While enjoying a three-course dinner, attendees engaged in open discussion with the speakers who rotated tables after a period of time. This format gave guests focused attention on their different business affairs. Questions presented were diverse, but answers were easily presented by the night’s speakers. When asked about employee retention regarding millennials, HR expert Richard spoke on the importance of pitching a journey rather than a benefits package. Learning and Development specialist, Kate, answered an inquiry about who decides what skills employees should develop by stating that this is the responsibility of employees themselves. Many questions were asked regarding legal matters which David Lawrence skillfully responded, but of course, it was all off the record.

Special thanks to both the SME and HR Committee Co-Chairs for their efforts in organizing this event. For more photos, please visit AMCHAM's Facebook page.
