Briefing on American Trade Mission to Myanmar

On March 27, the AMCHAM members met at AMCHAM Citi Boardroom to hear John Fleming, Senior Commercial Officer, U.S. Embassy in Myanmar and James Meisenheimer, Country Manager Myanmar, Tractus Asia, discuss the current business climate in the emerging Myanmar market. The last few years have seen reforms to the legal and regulatory framework for corporates, as the government strives to make the country more attractive to foreign investment. Despite the significant challenges facing foreign investors in Myanmar - labor, land and infrastructure are among the many hurdles in doing business  - firms willing to enter this market have a unique opportunity to gain first-mover advantage.

The speakers drilled down into the challenges and opportunities sector by sector, and the various possibilities for structuring foreign investments, with particular focus on energy, financial services, agriculture, consumer goods, healthcare, and logistics. The session finished off with a few case studies of companies recently entering the market, and an active question and answer session.

AMCHAM Myanmar, in partnership with the U.S. Commercial Service, is organizing a Trade Mission to Myanmar from April 29-30, to allow companies interested in exploring this frontier market a closer look behind the scenes, including market visits, meetings with senior government officials, site visits and one-on-one meetings with potential partners.  Interested parties should contact clara@amchammyanmar.com.

For those unable to attend in person, the Tractus presentation is now available for download on the members-only section of the website.  To access, please log in to our site and search under Resources.
