Women Skill Enhancement Center in Laem Chabang
Esso Thailand believes that when women have control over their incomes, they invest in health, education and well-being of their families, creating multiplier effect that benefits the society. Esso, therefore, established a Skill Enhancement Center for women in Laem Chabang in 2010. Serving as a local training, marketing and selling hub, the center also provides support for professional skills training. The goal is to help women become local entrepreneurs and generate primary or secondary income to improve the livelihood of their families and their community.
To date, the 10 participating communities surrounding the refinery have their own products to sell to the market ranging from nut toffee, hand-painted batik clothes, weaved baskets to shrimp paste, etc. The groups continue to grow and expand in terms of participants, products, entrepreneurial skills and income generation. Quarterly trainings and get-togethers as well as annual assessment-planning meetings are organized to keep on the momentum. With the right governance structure of 10 community leaders, Laem Chabang Municaplity and Esso executives in the committee, together drive the project with a rigorous process of needs assessment and instilling the sense of ownership in the community. Throughout the years, the project has strengthened the community circles and empowered women in the communities that matter the most to Esso Thailand operations.
