On March 24, representatives of AMCHAM Thailand and AMCHAM member companies met with Jumpoj Wannachatrasiri, Director of the Road Safety Integrated Collaboration Division, Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) at the Ministry of Interior, to present the “Road Safety is Everyone’s Business” campaign and brief the DDPM on road safety projects and initiatives by AMCHAM member companies designed to contribute to the formulation and implementation of Thailand’s national road safety strategy.
Representatives from Continental Automotive; Pernod Ricard; International SOS; FedEx Express; RMA Group; Esso Thailand; Save the Children/JW Marriott; and Ely Lilly Asia presented their efforts toward reducing traffic-related injuries and fatalities and making Thailand’s roads safer. Projects range from donating helmets to school children who are particularly vulnerable to motorcycle accidents, reducing drunk driving and increasing seatbelt use, raising awareness of unsafe practices that lead to road fatalities, and creating social accountability, to providing road safety education and training on traffic laws and regulations.
The DDPM team, in turn, briefed AMCHAM members on ongoing projects aimed at dethroning Thailand from the top of the list of countries with highest fatality rates, such as the “Seven Days of Safety” campaign over the Songkran holidays, stricter enforcement of traffic regulations, especially those related to drunk driving and excessive speeding, and expanding road safety campaigns for the duration of the year rather than for the two major holidays only.
Khun Jumpoj and his team acknowledged the usefulness of businesses sharing their best practices in making roads safer and committed to further collaborate with AMCHAM and its members to reduce the incidence of road injuries and fatalities in Thailand.
AMCHAM Thailand and its member companies firmly believe that “Road Safety is Everyone’s Business” and are committed to supplementing the Royal Thai Government’s laudable efforts toward sustained reductions in traffic related injuries and fatalities. AMCHAM member companies employ over 200,000 Thais and while many companies already implement internal road safety campaigns and train their staff on proper driving practices, AMCHAM is dedicated to encouraging all its members to be part of the solution in keeping Thailand’s roads safe.
