Independence Day Picnic 2017

On July 1 the American community in Bangkok gathered at Bangkok Patana School to celebrate America’s 241th birthday at AMCHAM's Independence Day Picnic.

We honored a long-standing tradition of pouring whiskey into the canal to appease the water spirits and were rewarded by sunny day of fun, good company, great live music, delectable food, and games for the whole family. Dr. Stephen Anderson, Commercial Attaché, spoke about the importance of independence and freedom and how these shared values foster the ties between the U.S. and Thailand.

Guests had an opportunity to sample the offerings of the Chili Cook-off contestants and vote for their favorite. Games like the gunny sack race, egg toss, tug of war and pie eating contest attracted both young and old. Coupled with traditional American goods like hamburgers, hot dogs, steak, chicken wings and apple pie and the live bands playing blues and rock, the day offered a slice of Americana for nostalgic Americans and the wider expat community in Thailand.

The highlight of the day was the raffle with valuable prizes that raised money for the AMCHAM Thailand Foundation to support education programs.

We thank all those who attended and supported the event: the Independence Day Committee, event and Star sponsors, the donors to the raffle and charity booth, and the community organizations that were present. We are particularly grateful for the dozens of volunteers who helped make this event possible.
