A: It can be difficult to find a job in Thailand. Local salaries are much lower than Western standards. There are also restrictions on employing foreigners which have legal ramifications, i.e. visas and work permit issues. Most jobs in Bangkok are found through networking and not by blindly sending resumes to a company. AMCHAM often receives emails asking about employment opportunities with AMCHAM member companies in Thailand. Unfortunately, we cannot assist with referrals or job searches. That being said, the following will give you three pieces of practical advice to guide your efforts:

First, don’t waste your time or others’ time by being unprepared. It is essential to your job search or career change success that you do your homework and prepare yourself before contacting anybody. The following career information web sites provide expert advice on how to prepare for and conduct a job hunt.

• www.jobhuntersbible.com—The JobHuntersBible.com web site is designed as a supplement to the book, What Color Is Your Parachute? A Practical Manual for Job-Hunters and Career-Changers, which is the best selling job-hunting and career-changing book in the world. 20,000 people buy the book each month, and there are more than 8,000,000 copies in print. It will be particularly helpful if you use the site along with the book.
• www.monster.com—Here you will find information such as Job Search Basics (including Virtual Interviews, Interview Prep), Targeted Advice (based on your professional qualifications, industry focus), etc.
• www.vault.com—Vault: the most trusted name in career information. Here you will find detailed information on Industries, Career Topics, Companies, and Education Center. You can also download for FREE the 294-page Vault Guide to Schmoozing, featured in Time magazine, which provides advice and inspiration to help make the sometimes unpleasant and difficult practice of networking easier, more productive, and perhaps most importantly, enjoyable.
• Create a free digital identity to advance your career. Harness the power of the internet to raise your profile. One of the best business networking sites is www.LinkedIn.com. You can create a free professional profile where you control the content. Then your name and a link to your profile are indexed on search engines like Google, Yahoo, and others. So when someone “googles” your name, your profile will appear in the search results. This is an ideal way to showcase your skills and expertise. Recruiters now use professional networking sites like www.LinkedIn.com to look for new talent. And because it’s known as a professional networking tool—unlike online job boards—you don’t have to worry that your boss will assume you’re job searching if or when your profile is found.

Second, if you are looking for a more senior position, be aware that executive search firms are often looking for executives with proven records in Asian countries. You should visit the web sites of these executive search firms and register your interest, experiences and skills with them. The AMCHAM website has a list of Executive Search and Personnel Recruitment companies that are members. Go to our website, www.amchamthailand.com, click on Members/Company Directory, then search by Industry Type for “Executive Search and Personnel Recruitment.”

Third, AMCHAM has over 650 member companies in Thailand. Job-seekers should visit our online Company Directory to learn more about AMCHAM member companies. Each company’s listing includes a link to its own website as well as contact information. Some of the AMCHAM member companies will have “employment opportunities” pages on their websites that may prove useful as well.

A: The Thailand Department of Export Promotion’s website, www.thaitrade.com, offers information on over 10,000 Thai export companies in a searchable database. You may also want to contact the trade association for your industry. You may find a list of Trade Associations on our website.

A: No. People of all nationalities, from any organization may join AMCHAM. American citizenship is not a requirement and we have many non-American companies in our membership.

A: We offer an Associate Membership for companies and individuals residing outside of Thailand. Associates can avail themselves of AMCHAM benefits and services when they are in Thailand.

A: AMCHAM Thailand provides American businesses and businesspersons with a venue for the exchange of ideas and for identifying common purposes to pursue in both the private and government sectors, in Thailand, in the Asian region, and in the United States. AMCHAM also provides the focal point for channeling social service activities intended to benefit Thais and Thailand on an unofficial basis.

A: The objectives of AMCHAM are:

• To represent our diverse membership on issues of common interest,
• To provide a forum for networking and access to information,
• To serve as a trusted and influential advocate with the Thai government on behalf of American businesses in Thailand, and
• To encourage civic-minded participation in the Thai community.

A: Committee membership is free. Any AMCHAM member may generally attend any committee meeting. Please register in advance on the AMCHAM website for the meetings you plan to attend.

A: Participation in committees is a benefit of AMCHAM membership and is generally limited to AMCHAM members because the committees serve as the "voice of AMCHAM" on various sector issues and help develop Chamber programs. At the discretion of the committee leadership, members may invite a guest to a committee meeting if the guest is interested in joining the Chamber him/herself.

A: AMCHAM organizes over 300 events per year, including monthly luncheons, committee meetings with various speakers, networking social evenings, golf and bowling tournaments, and the annual Installation Ball. Please visit our Events Calendar for further information.

A: The AMCHAM Thailand Charitable Foundation (“ATCF”) supports education in Thailand through its Adopt-a-School, Student Scholarship, and Teacher Fellowship Programs. Donations provide playgrounds, water tanks and filtration systems, libraries, computers and capital repairs to schools in rural Thailand, scholarships for needy Thai university students, and teacher salaries. Donations to the ATCF are deductible for Thailand tax purposes. The ATCF is Public Charitable Organization Number 632 of the Notification of the Ministry of Finance.

A: Student Scholarships: The AMCHAM Thailand Charitable Foundation provides scholarships to Thai students studying at Thai universities. The students must meet income and scholastic requirements. This year, the Foundation has committed to fund 180 student scholarships. Since 1976, this program has supported approximately 1,707 students.

Adopt-a-School Program: AMCHAM encourages our members to adopt needy primary schools throughout Thailand. Adopt-a-School donations are used for libraries, water tanks and filtration systems, playgrounds and other items needed by the school. Schools that receive funds must be accredited primary schools (K-6) by the Ministry of Education. Since 1982, this program has supported more than 700 projects.

Teacher Fellowship Program: Begun in 2005 as a direct response to the loss of teachers in the wake of the 2004 tsunami, this program places educators in schools in areas of need. Sponsoring a teacher can provide your company with a direct and personal link to a local school.

A: Thai-American Business (T-AB) is a full-color, bimonthly publication with news items and informative articles on subjects of current interest, along with information about AMCHAM and its members. Approximately 2,500 copies of T-AB Magazine are circulated to AMCHAM members, the U.S. Embassy, and the other Chambers of Commerce in Thailand and the Asia-Pacific region.

A: AMCHAM publishes 2,000 copies of its full color Membership Directory. The 2011-2012 edition, contains 420 pages of profiles of AMCHAM's 650+ member companies, ranging from financial institutions to energy companies to manufacturers to professional services suppliers. The directory is considered a leading source of detailed information about multinational corporations, their suppliers, and specialty businesses in Bangkok and throughout Thailand.
